For many African artists, the structures in the art world are defined by unbalanced power dynamics and exploitation of labour, while those new to buying art and investing in culture are often put off by deliberately exclusionary conventions and obscured information.
Art of This Place exists because we believe emerging artists should be treated fairly, transparently, and with integrity; and we believe finding, appreciating and investing in this art should be easy.
Amy Simons is a Cape Town based artist who is a self-taught visual artist who mainly works with watercolour, oil paint and inks. She is drawn to using watery materials that enable her to explore themes of love, loss, intimacy, and sexuality.
