Andile Phewa was born in Durban in 1990. He currently resides in Cape Town. He studied at the Market Photo Workshop, where he completed both foundation and intermediate courses. It was through those courses that he mastered low light photography and shadows.

Andile seeks to foreground the narrative of his work. In 2016 Andile participated in a group exhibition with Radio Africa in Barcelona with his Black Series, a visual story in which he documented queer artists and activists in Johannesburg. His recent solo exhibition Missing Subject that he showed at A4 gallery (Cape Town) in October 2020, looks into the absence of his father.
